Jon Rahm denies Scottie Scheffler being a threat to him but says the Masters champ is 'top 5 in every category'
Jon Rahm was asked about Scottie Scheffler ahead of the 2024 US Open, as most golfers are given Scheffler's World No. 1 rank. Scheffler is playing very well right now, and he's all anyone can think to ask about with the year's third Major set to begin tomorrow, Thursday, June 13.
Rahm was asked whether or not Scheffler's hot streak forced him to try and raise his game, and if it brought a new pressure to tournaments. Without hesitation, he replied,
"No." [02:50]
Also asked what part of Scheffler's game has contributed to the No. 1's impressive success, Rahm said,
"I haven't watched every round he's played, obviously. It's hard to do that. I haven't been following the stats, but it just doesn't seem like anything is wrong. Let's just say it that way. Based on what he's been doing the last few years, if he could just stay around even on strokes, gain putting, he could have a season like this. When you're top five in pretty much every category... just putt average and you'll beat everybody."
Jon Rahm said he hadn't watched every round that Scottie Scheffler had played. He did add that Scheffler is doing everything well, but he believes that Scheffler's mind is what provides him a boost in his golf. Overall, Rahm kept his answer simple and downplayed the hot streak, noting that it's not entirely surprising that Scheffler is able to do this.
Scheffler has won five tournaments this season. Among them are two PGA Tour Signature Events, the Masters Tournament (where he took the crown from Rahm) and the Players Championship. His worst finish is a T17 and that's the only time he's finished outside the top 10.
Since leaving for LIV Golf, Rahm can only face Scheffler directly in Majors. He did so in the Masters and the PGA Championship but will not do so in the US Open.
Jon Rahm withdraws from slated US Open showdown with Scottie Scheffler
Jon Rahm revealed on Tuesday, June 11 that he is dealing with a foot injury and is withdrawing from the 2024 US Open.
Rahm said (via CBS Sports):
"After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long-term health to withdraw from this week's U.S. Open Championship. To say I'm disappointed is a massive understatement! I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA staff, volunteers and community of Pinehurst for hosting and putting on what I'm sure will be an amazing championship!"
Rahm added that he hopes he will be back in action sooner than later, but he won't have a chance to add to his two Major wins by winning the US Open for the second time in his career this year.
