“Just keep swimming”: Bryson DeChambeau reminisced his dad telling him iconic Finding Nemo quote during his final bunker shot before US Open glory
Following his epic win at the US Open 2024, Bryson DeChambeau got a little emotional, remembering his late dad. He reminisced about his dad, who always used to encourage him, with the iconic quote from "Finding Nemo."
On Sunday, June 16, DeChambeau fired a 1-over 71 to finish at 6-under after four rounds of the US Open. This was enough for a one-shot victory over Rory McIlroy, who shot 1-under 69.
Following his second US Open win, DeChambeau spoke to Xirius XM's John Maginnes. During the interview, he remembered his dad, Jon, who had passed away in 2022 after a long battle with diabetes.
"I saw my dad up there and wished he was here for this one," he said. "I've had years of hard work, and my dad telling me, 'Just keep swimming for us.' It's a dumb Finding Nemo quote, but 'just keep swimming' from Dory and no matter how hard it got I just kept going.
"Even on the last hole when I got that bad lie, I pulled it and shouldn't have pulled it but got into a bad lie, sticky situation. I hit it in the bunker. I just kept telling myself just keep going you can get this up and down you've done this before in your career," he added.
Earlier, the final round of the US Open was nothing short of a thriller. At one point, Bryson DeChambeau seemed destined for a runner-up finish, given the day McIlroy was having. After 13 holes, the Northern Irishman was eight-under for the tournament, while DeChambeau was seven-under at that stage.
However, McIlroy missed two crucial putts in the remaining holes, including one on the eighteenth that could have at least secured a playoff. Bryson DeChambeau, on the other hand, made a spectacular bunker shot on the eighteenth, landing the ball just a couple of feet from the pin. From there, an easy putt ensured his second major win.
