Lexi Thompson explains how US Solheim Cup team players 'get super into it' with patriotism
US Team Solheim Cup player Lexi Thompson has opened up about how the team event ignited the feeling of patriotism amongst the players. The American golfer is gearing up for the upcoming edition of the biennial tournament, scheduled for next week.
Ahead of the prestigious team event, Thompson, who will be making her seventh appearance at the tournament, spoke about two of her teammates, with whom she has played in the past, Morgan Pressel and Paula Creamer, and explained how they wear tattoos on their faces to reflect their patriotism.
Thompson said (via Solheim Cup X account):
"I would say that most patriotic players that I've played with have been maybe Morgan and Paula, with the face tattoos and the scrunchies and everything. But, we all get super into it. It's just a matter of our own ways. You know, some are a little more girlier than others, some aren't. But we just we love representing our country every time we tee it up."
Lexi Thompson became the captain's pick for the 2024 Solheim Cup. She made her debut in the biennial tournament in 2013 and has not missed any editions since. She was also part of the USA team when they won the tournament in 2015 and 2017. However, this could be her last time competing in the team tournament, as the 29-year-old golfer announced her retirement earlier this year.
"I look forward to a little time for myself"- Lexi Thompson announced retirement from professional golf
Earlier this year, in May, Lexi Thompson announced her retirement by taking to her Instagram account and sharing a heartfelt message. Writing a letter to the game of golf, the former Major winner reflected on her incredible journey and how the sport helped her develop as a person while battling challenges.
She was incredibly thankful to her family and fans for their constant support throughout her journey and announced that the 2024 season would mark the end of her professional golf career.
As Thompson prepares to retire from golf, she also shared her post-retirement plans and stated that she plans to spend more time focusing on herself. She said:
"While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time. I’m excited to enjoy the remainder of the year as there are still goals I want to accomplish. I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my life. Time with family, friends, and my trusted companion [dog], Leo."
“I will always look for ways to contribute to the sport and inspire the next generation of golfers. And of course, I look forward to a little time for myself," she added.
Thompson started playing golf professionally in 2010 and has won 15 professional tournaments in her career, with 11 of them coming on the LPGA Tour. She won the Chevron Championship in 2014, her only Major title. Her next outing will be at the Solheim Cup, taking place from September 13 to 15.
