LIV Golf announces new exclusive change to 2024 Promotions event

LIV Golf will hold the second edition of its Promotions event at the Riyadh Golf Club in Saudi Arabia from December 12-14. The event will have a similar format to the previous season but with a significant change.

The circuit's news service reported that participants in the LIV Golf Promotions will compete for a single spot in the league in 2025. That is, only the winner will get a contract.

However, it was reported that the rest of the top 10 members will earn full exemption to the Asian Tour's International Series in 2025. There they will be able to continue their progression to LIV Golf, albeit for the 2026 season.

At the end of the 2024 season, five LIV Golf players were relegated, so one of those spots will be filled by the winner of the Promotions Event. A second spot will be filled by the final leader of the 2024 International Series. At this time, it has not been announced how the other spots will be filled.

The 2023 Promotions Event awarded three LIV Golf contracts for the 2024 season (Jinichiro Kozuma, Kalle Samooja and Kieran Vincent). Two of them (Samooja and Vincent) are among those relegated at the end of the 2024 season.

LIV Golf started the 2024 season by expanding its roster to 13 teams of four players each, or 52 member players. To complete the field of 54 players, two wild cards were awarded, one of which went to Hudson Swafford for the entire season. The other went to Laurie Canter for the first two tournaments and Anthony Kim for the remaining 11.

Who will be eligible to play in the 2024 LIV Golf Promotions?

The LIV Golf news service also outlined the eligibility categories for the Promotions event, which are different for the first and second rounds. Here are the eligibility criteria (via LIV Golf):

First round

The following players are eligible to compete in the first round field:

1. Members of the 2023 Walker Cup and 2024 Palmer Cup Teams

2. Winner and runner-up of the following last played amateur events:

US Amateur Championship
The Amateur Championship
Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship
Latin America Amateur Championship
European Amateur Championship
African Amateur Championship
NCAA Championship (Individual)
Eisenhower Trophy (Individual)

3. Leading 15 available players from within the top 40 World Amateur Golf Rankings as of November 19, 2024 (excluding players exempt into round 2)

4. Leading 25 available players from within the top 40 on the final 2024 International Series Rankings (excluding those exempt into round two)

5. Leading 5 available players from inside the top 10 from each of the following professional Tours as of November 19, 2024:

KPGA Korean Tour
Sunshine Tour
PGA Tour of Australasia

6. Leading 30 available players from within the top 300 in The Universal Golf Rankings (TUGR) as of November 19, 2024 (excluding those who are exempt into Round 2)

7. Invitations as determined by LIV Golf League

Second round

The top 20 finishers (plus ties) will qualify for the second round. They will be joined by the following players, who are exempt from the first round:

1. Leading 2 available players from within the top 15 on the World Amateur Golf Rankings as of November 19, 2024

2. Players ranked 2 to 8 on the final 2024 International Series Rankings

3. Top 3 Players from each of the following professional Tours as of November 19, 2024

Third round

The first round scores will be erased to start the second round, and the top 20 (plus ties) will qualify for the third round. Again, scores will be deleted and 36 holes will be played to determine the champion.
