"LIV must have hired new scriptwriters", "Sorry the PGAT is competitive" - Fans react to Adrian Meronk calling the PGA Tour a 'rat race'
Adrian Meronk gave an interview to the United Arab Emirates' Gulf News in which he discussed his decision to join LIV Golf. Among other things, he called the PGA Tour a "rat race," alluding to the fact that, as he put it, "everyone is out for themselves."
Fans have responded to Meronk's views in a variety of ways. Some see it as an attempt to justify his signing with LIV Golf, while others see reason in his words and recall that other players have expressed similar views before.
One fan posted the following on X (formerly Twitter):
"Sorry the PGAT is competitive"
Anothe user said the following:
"LIV must’ve hired new script writers"
Let's take a look at some other reactions on X:
"This rings true. Americans don’t seem to understand that not all foreigners want to base themselves in the US. Bob McIntyre also spoke about this," one fan posted.
"he was pissed he was left off the Ryder Cup ... now he is coming up with a different story," another user wrote.
"Play better and you wouldn’t be in bad place in PGA, he’s a nobody on Liv tour now and won’t ever win a major," another fan said.
"I don’t think many Americans understand the enormity of this issue. Ryo Ishikawa, Adrian Meronk & many other talented international golfers do," another user posted.
This is part of what Adrian Meronk said in his interview with Gulf News:
"If I’d played in America, I would have had to base myself there and I would have been so lonely and so miserable, I think...it was a great decision for me. It's given me so much life and enjoyment. It’s like a rat race on the PGA Tour – everybody is looking out for themselves, and nobody talks to you."
A look at Adrian Meronk's 2024 schedule
Adrian Meronk stated in his interview that part of his decision to join LIV Golf was based on the fact that he could continue to live in Dubai and play fewer tournaments. Here's how he put it:
"Joining LIV Golf meant I could stay in Dubai, which is a place that I like, and play fewer tournaments, as I was exhausted last year [2023] after playing 27 times."
His 2024 schedule so far has included 23 tournaments, 10 of which were played in the United States.
Meronk started the 2024 season playing the initial DP World Tour tournaments (the first two were played before the end of the 2023 calendar year). He had not yet signed with LIV Golf, two events were in Australia and the other two in Dubai:
- Australian PGA Championship: T40
- Australian Open: T8
- Dubai Invitational: 10th
- Hero Dubai Desert Classic: 2nd
He then joined LIV Golf, whose season started in February. In this league, Adrian Meronk played 14 tournaments in 2024, seven of them in the United States:
- Mayakoba: 47th
- Las Vegas: T9
- Jeddah: T6
- Hong Kong: T15
- Miami: 17th
- Adelaide: T26
- Singapore: T10
- Houston: 2nd
- Nashville: T32
- Andalucia: T42
- United Kingdom: T16
- Greenbrier: T42
- Chicago: T23
- Dallas (Team Championship)
At the same time, Meronk played in all four of the season's majors. Three of those events were played in the United States:
- The Masters: Cut
- PGA Championship: Cut
- US Open: Cut
- The Open Championship: T50
His 23rd tournament of the season was the Paris Olympics where he represented Poland and finished T49.
Meronk is currently qualified for the two DP World Tour play-off events (the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the DP World Tour Championship). According to the European Tour website, the Pole is already confirmed to play in the first of the two tournaments.
If he plays in both events, Meronk would finish the season with 25 tournaments played, two fewer than in 2023.
