Nick Dunlap beats Tiger Woods, others to a unique record with his Barracuda Championship win
Nick Dunlap won the 2024 Barracuda Championship on Sunday. The 20-year-old golfer made history with the win at Tahoe Mountain Club as he became the first player ever to win on the PGA Tour as both an amateur and a pro in the same season. This is a record even Tiger Woods failed to set.
Dunlap broke into the scene in January when he won The American Express in La Quinta. He was playing as a sophomore at the University of Alabama at the time. However, the golfer soon quit the role and got on the Tour as a pro. He has now won again.
Notably, the win also saw Dunlap become the first rookie to win twice on Tour since The Open Championship winner Xander Schauffele. Notably, the two-time major champion first set the record in the 2016-17 PGA Tour season.
The 30-year-old had then won the Rookie of the Year title for his accomplishment. Dunlap is currently the top contender for this year's title.
It is pertinent to note that Dunlap didn’t get paid for winning The American Express in January as he was an amateur then. However, the young American made $720,000 for his efforts at the Barracuda Championship this weekend.
Nick Dunlap’s season so far
Nick Dunlap became just the eighth amateur to win a PGA Tour event when he won The American Express outing. He was the first golfer in 33 years to do so.
The golfer was quick to change his player status and turn pro. However, he went on to miss six cuts in sixteen events including the Masters, PGA Championship, and the US Open. He seems to have found his form back at the Barracuda Championship.

Commenting on his amateur-pro double, Nick Dunlap said on Sunday, as quoted by Golf Monthly:
“I never thought that I would have my name next to that, but it’s definitely an honor… It’s been a little tough after AmEx. You kind of lose a little bit of confidence and wonder if you can do it again.”
Notably, Sunday’s win saw Dunlap move up to 41 in the Official World Golf Ranking from 71.
