“No. 1 gets the trophy and No. 2 doesn't” – Rose Zhang rules out difference between Olympics golf and regular LPGA events
Following the third round of the Olympics, Rose Zhang is in contention for a podium finish. However, she doesn't believe that the pressure here will be any different from the regular tournaments, although finishing outside the top three would leave her empty-handed.
On Friday, August 9, Zhang fired a 5-under 67 to jump to T3 after 54 holes. She picked up two birdies and two eagles in the third round, bringing her aggregate to 7-under, just two strokes behind leaders Morgane Metraux and Lydia Ko.
After her round, Zhang was asked if she would approach the final round differently, considering that finishing outside the top three at the Olympics means leaving empty-handed, unlike in regular LPGA Tour events.
"I think even in our regular tournaments, even No. 1 gets the trophy and No. 2 doesn't," she replied. "In a way, that's kind of similar but at the same time, you know, you can't really think about score, especially when you're out here. This golf course is difficult so I'm going to need all my energy and mindset on the golf ball."
Reflecting on her round, Rose Zhang said the conditions were tricky, making it difficult to think far ahead.
"Played pretty difficult," she added. "You really just have to make sure that you hit your fairways, you hit your greens, and if opportunity allows you, try to make some putts. But other than that, that's all you can do."
