"One of the biggest collapses of the year"- Brandel Chamblee bashes Jon Rahm after he misses out on medal at the Paris Olympics
Jon Rahm lost out on a podium finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics in heartbreaking fashion, despite holding a four shot lead halfway through the final round of the tournament. Rahm eventually ended up finishing T5, alongside Rory McIlroy.
It was Scottie Scheffler who took the gold medal instead, with Tommy Fleetwood finishing second and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama finishing third. Golf commentator Brandel Chamblee criticized Jon Rahm's performance after the Spaniard failed to win a medal at the Paris Olympics, comparing it to Rory McIlroy's 'choke' at the US Open earlier this year.
Here's what Chamblee said in a video posted via Christian Powers of the Golf Digest on X:
"Scottie Scheffler, 6 back, making the turn from the gold medal position and wins gold without a playoff. One shoots 29, Jon Rahm shoots 39. I’m gonna put that down as one of the biggest collapses, chokes of the year. Right up there with Rory McIlroy at the U.S. Open."
Rahm entered the final round of golf at the Paris Olympics tied for the lead alongside Xander Schauffele. While Rahm finished T5, Schauffele faded and ended up finishing T9. Scottie Scheffler has now become the second American male golfer to win a gold medal in modern golf at the Olympics.
"Hurts right now more than I expected"- Jon Rahm opens up after losing podium finish at the Olympics
Rahm was disappointed in himself after his fifth place finish at the Paris Olympics. Speaking about his performance on the final day of the event, Rahm said (via Brentley Romine of Golf Channel on X),
"I’ve been saying all week that I would know how much this means when the tournament was over. Sometimes you know when you win, but you definitely know when you don’t win it, and this just stings on a different emotional level. Hurts right now more than I expected."
