Parker Coody joins twin brother in Honda Classic field as he aces Monday qualifier
Twin brothers Parker Coody and Pierceson Coody are set to face off against each other at Palm Beach in the Hero Classic.
Parker secured one out of four spots in Monday's qualifier after he birdied the first playoff hole. However, Pierceson, number 241 in the OWGR, was already on the spot due to a sponsor exemption.
Prior to returning Tuesday morning for the playoffs against Ryan Gerard, Ian Holt, Brett Drewitt, and Jake McCrory, Parker Coody fired a 6-under 66 at the Tesoro Club. He birdied five of his first six holes.
On the opening par-4 hole of the extra round, Parker hit the flagstick with his approach ball to set up an easy birdie and advance with Drewitt, who also scored a birdie.
With a 65, Trace Crowe, an Auburn alumnus, won the qualifying round. He will play with Andrew Kozan, a sponsor exemption and another former Tigers teammate, in the Honda field.
Parker Coody will play in a PGA Tour event for the second time in his career, after failing to make the cut on his debut at the 2020 Shriners Hospital for Children Open. Parker holds conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he has missed two cuts in as many outings this season.
Pierceson almost made an approach for an eagle on the opening playoff hole before taking the match with a tap-in birdie.
The Honda Classic field only includes eight of the top 50 players in the world rankings following back-to-back Tour-designated tournaments.
On Thursday, Parker Coody started just ahead of the Harry Higgs-Brandon Matthews-Pierceson Coody trio, playing with Kyle Westmoreland and Scott Harrington. They were placed in successive groups rather than being partnered together for the first two rounds.
On February 23, the Honda Classic begins at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The 144 participants will start the tournament, and after Friday's game, the top 65 players and ties will advance to the weekend's game.
Parker Coody and his twin brother Pierceson Coody's careers
Parker and his twin brother Pierceson, who is 37 minutes younger, are both third-generation professional golfers. Their father Kyle played golf as an undergraduate at the University of Texas and started more than 20 times on the Korn Ferry Tour, between 1990 and 1996.
Their grandfather Charles competed on the PGA Tour from the 1960s to the mid-1980s, winning three times on the Tour, including the 1971 Masters Tournament.
The University of Texas golf team that won the national title the previous season had two brothers as players.
Parker Coody is presently rated No. 788 in the Official World Golf Rankings. After he and his twin Pierceson assisted Texas in winning the NCAA team title, Parker won his first professional tournament on the PGA Tour Canada last summer. He won the TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational in November.
Just a few weeks have passed since Pierceson, who is currently ranked 241 in the world, won the KFT for the second time. He broke his hamate bone in the KFT Finals and withdrew from the KFT Championship in September. But he only needed three starts to recover from left-handed surgery before winning a playoff in Panama.
