PGA Championship tickets surge in prices after Scottie Scheffler’s arrest early on Friday

Scottie Scheffler's arrest has been the news of the day during the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship. The issue has not only had an effect on the player himself, but has also been reflected in ticket prices in the secondary market.

According to the TickPick web platform, ground passes for the third round surged 29%, while the increase for the fourth and decisive day was 35%.

The increase means that ground passes for Saturday went from $195 to $251, while those for Sunday went from $202 to $272. Ground passes are the cheapest tickets of all those sold at high-level golf tournaments.

It is common for tickets for these types of events to be traded on the secondary market. TickPick is a platform dedicated to this activity, which bills itself as "the only major ticket marketplace that doesn't charge any hidden fees."

Scottie Scheffler made it to his tee time on time, thanks to the PGA Championship organizers' efforts to get him out of jail. Scheffler played his first round for a score of 5 under, with six birdies and one bogey.

With the second round remaining, Scottie Scheffler is tied for third place with a score of 9 under. He is two strokes behind the transitional leader, Collin Morikawa.

What has Scottie Scheffler said about his arrest?

Shortly after being released from his arrest, Scottie Scheffler issued the following statement (via PGA Tour news service):

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, an there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions."
"I'm hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today."
Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

After finishing his second round, Scottie Scheffler met with the press covering the event. Here's what he had to say (via Golf.com):

"My sympathies go out to the family of Mr. Mills. I can’t imagine what they’re going through right now… My situation will be handled. It was just a big misunderstanding. I can’t comment on it right now."

During his meeting with the press, Scheffler also revealed that he was stretching while in the cell, as he thought he still had a chance to play his second round of the PGA Championship.

Scheffler also had words of praise for the officers who cared for him in jail and thanked all those who serve across the country.
