PGA Tour pro Michael S Kim goes ‘back to sleep’ after email from Wyndham Championship, makes bold start time prediction

The 2024 Wyndham Championship’s opening round on Thursday (August 8) has been delayed due to Tropical Storm Debby. The opening tee time has been pushed eight hours as heavy rain and gusty winds continue to wreak havoc in the Greensboro area. PGA Tour pro Michael S Kim isn’t optimistic about a delayed start either.

According to the PGA Tour, Round 1 tee times at Sedgefield Country Club will not begin until at least 3 pm ET. The officials confirmed that all tournament facilities in the host club have been closed until further notice. All players participating in the event received an email updating them regarding the same. Sharing the mail online, Michael S Kim revealed that he is going “back to sleep.”

The 31-year-old golfer also shared a weather forecast of the area and predicted that the event won’t ‘probably start until Friday afternoon’ and would likely have ‘a Monday finish.’

Michael S Kim wrote on X on Thursday morning, minutes after the PGA Tour confirmed the Wyndham Championship’s delayed start:

“Back to sleep… Prob not starting until Friday afternoon looking at the forecast and a Monday finish.”

It is pertinent to note that Tropical Storm Debby is expected to cause heavy rain throughout the day. According to officials, rainfall could reach 4 to 6 inches by day's end. A flash flood warning has also been spread in the region.

The National Weather Service posted in a mass push notification:

“This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order.”

Fans barred from attending the Wyndham Championship

Earlier, the 2024 Wyndham Championship organizers announced their decision to bar fans from entering the Sedgefield Country Club on Thursday. The announcement, made on Wednesday evening, dubbed it dangerous for spectators to step out in the Greensboro area, North Carolina, due to Hurricane Debby.

Tournament Director Bobby Powell said in a release on Wednesday, as quoted by PGATOUR.com:

“This decision was a difficult one for us to make with our partners at the PGA Tour, but everyone’s safety is our top priority. The most recent forecast looks like the storm could clear our area sometime Friday.”

According to the announcement, the first round of the event was set to start on time at 6:50 am ET. It had also noted that “play will continue as long as conditions allow.” However, the officials took a U-turn on Thursday morning and decided to halt the start of the event until the weather condition cleared.

The fans who held tickets for Thursday were told to use their ticket to attend any other round in the week. It is pertinent to note that the Wyndham Championship is the final event of the regular PGA Tour season and features a 156-player field.
