Phil Mickelson becomes the third-ever golfer to make 100 cuts at majors during PGA Championship 2023
Phil Mickelson nearly escaped from missing the cut at the 2023 PGA Championship as he concluded at 5-over after playing 36 holes. This was Mickelson's 100th cut at a Major, becoming only the third golfer to achieve this historic feat.
Before Mickelson, only Jack Nicklaus (131) and Gary Player (102) have made 100 cuts at major championships. The 52-year-old veteran is also the oldest to make 100 weekends in majors from just 119 starts. 15 times major champion Tiger Woods has made 77 cuts from 91 starts in Majors.
The two-time PGA Championship winner has also equalled the record for most cuts made in tournament's history. Mickelson has made 27 cuts, same as Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd. His first cut in a Major was at the 1990 US Open.
Mickelson was quoted as saying via Golf Monthly:
"The first two days I've played terrible. I've driven it poorly. I've not felt good with the putter. I haven't chipped great. My irons have been average. It makes me optimistic that I still made the cut playing as poorly as I did, and I think if I can get it turned around, I can make a run."
