A recount of Rickie Fowler's victory at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic
Rickie Fowler had been out of the PGA Tour winner's circle for four and a half years when he won the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. That was his sixth PGA Tour victory and the 10th (official 9th) of his professional career.
Fowler went from strength to strength in the event as he carded consecutive rounds of 67, 65 and 64 to go into the deciding day leading the tournament with a score of 20 under, followed by Adam Hadwin one stroke behind.
However, Fowler posted his worst score of the event during the fourth round (4 under), while Hadwin did just enough to tie him (5 under). Collin Morikawa played the second best fourth round (8 under) to move up four spots on the leaderboard and make it into the three-way playoff.
Sudden death began on the 18th hole and Fowler needed no more than one hole to seal the deal. He birdied the hole with an 11-foot putt, while Hadwin and Morikawa each missed a 21-foot putt that would have allowed them to hold on for a tie.
Fowler had one eagle, 28 birdies and five bogeys during the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He led the field in total strokes gained (15,419) and was strong in the short game, carding a 'Stroke Gained: Approach to Green' of 7,556 (2nd of the event) and hitting 62 of 73 greens in regulation (84.93%, 2nd).
