"I think about it like training for a Major" - LPGA star Michelle Wie West opens up about her pregnancy struggle
Michelle Wie West and her husband, Jonnie West, are parents to two children. Their daughter, Makenna, was born in 2020. They welcomed a son, Jerry Yoojun West, this October. However, in between these years, Wie West experienced a pregnancy loss and underwent a challenging IVF journey.
In a recent interview with Nike, the LPGA star opened up about her pregnancy struggles. She shared that she drew on her experience dealing with the physical demands of being a professional athlete to navigate the IVF process.
"As a professional golfer, I had to learn how to keep my stamina up, keep my body strong, and that helped me steel myself through the injections, the bruising," she said.
The five-time LPGA Tour winner added that while both situations couldn't be completely compared, there were a few similarities. She said that from both experiences, she learned the importance of believing in the process.
"When I think about pregnancy now, I think about it like training for a major," she said. "When I got pregnant with my first child, it was during Covid, and it happened so easily that I didn’t even think about it. Getting pregnant the second time was completely different. It didn’t come as easily.
"I paid more attention to preparing my body for birth. I worked with a nutritionist on an eating plan. While I couldn’t really work out too much, I was mindful about movement like walking. And I was more intentional on managing my energy levels, and my emotions as well."
Wie and Jonnie West got married in 2019. West is the son of NBA legend Jerry West and serves as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Golden State Warriors.
