Ryder Cup 2023: Everything you need to know about upcoming tournament

Team USA has not won on Team Europe's turf in the Ryder Cup since 1993 and are hoping to reverse that trend with this year's match in Italy. The venue is the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club just outside Rome, which has previously hosted the Italian Open.

Right now, the following players will be on Team Europe, which will be captained by Luke Donald. From the European Points List, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Victor Perez will be on the roster. From the World Points List, Alex Noren, Viktor Hovland and Shane Lowry would make the team.

For Team USA, these players will make it onto Zach Johnson's team:

  • Scottie Scheffler
  • Will Zalatoris
  • Justin Thomas
  • Collin Morikawa
  • Max Homa
  • Cameron Young

In the United States, NBC has the broadcasting rights. The Golf Channel will likely have all the coverage, though the time zones may make it a little challenging to catch everything at the time it occurs since it may well be the middle of the night.

Sky Sports will be broadcasting it in the UK.

Here's the full schedule:

  • Tuesday, September 27 to Thursday, September 28- Practice and opening ceremony on Thursday
  • Friday, September 29- Four fourballs matches in morning, four foursomes matches in afternoon
  • Saturday, September 30- Four fourballs matches in morning, four foursomes matches in afternoon.
  • Sunday October 1: 12 singles matches and closing ceremony

Unfortunately, general admission tickets are completely sold out at the moment, but there are alternative options for viewing the tournament live.

Fourballs is when two Americans play against two Europeans with all four players on the same course at the same time. Foursomes is when the two Americans and two Europeans share one ball each and rotate who is taking the shots.

Singles is when one European and one American face off head-to-head. Over the course of the tournament, each team will try to separate itself from the other and effectively make it so that the other team cannot come back. When that happens, the Ryder Cup is over.

Could the Ryder Cup get awkward this year?

The PGA Tour-LIV Golf divide is front and center at this year's Ryder Cup, so things could potentially be awkward.

Luke Donald, the current Team Europe captain, replaced Henrik Stenson as captain after Stenson was removed for defecting to LIV. However, Stenson could still be involved in the tournament.

Things could get awkward, as Donald said:

“Potentially. It’s just a strange situation isn’t it? But he’s obviously playing, so it seems like he is fine to be around [the DP World Tour].”

Clarity should be coming soon as the court case deciding the future of LIV players should be settled and enacted at some point soon:

“To get some clarity will definitely help me. Hopefully we’ll have a bit more of that in a few weeks. But it’s not in my control, you know, and I’ll deal with it either way. My job is to get 12 guys in that team room, all on the same page, willing to win the Ryder Cup.”

TIme will tell if the awkwardness shows through for Team Europe.
