Ryder Cup legend leaves out Scottie Scheffler from his top 3 ‘box office’ list, picks Ludvig Aberg instead - “He doesn’t have Tiger’s aura”
Colin Montgomerie believes three players in golf are must-see, and Scottie Scheffler is not one of them. The world number one is a five-time winner on the PGA Tour this year, including the Masters, Players Championship, and two Signature Events. However, according to Montgomerie, he (Scheffler) is not "box office" for golf right now.
Instead, Montgomerie added Ludvig Aberg to the list. The young golfer made it onto the list instead of Scheffler alongside the two who battled for 18 holes at the US Open on Sunday: Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy.
Via Golf Magic, the former Ryder Cup star said:
"I think they're your box office, and I'm not including Scottie Scheffler because I wouldn't say he was box office as such. He’s a hell of a golfer and still the best in the world, but I wouldn't say he’s box office. I wouldn’t go, ‘Okay, now where is Scottie Scheffler? I must run out on the course and see him play.'"
He claimed that he would run out and watch McIlroy, DeChambeau, and Aberg if he needed to. Montgomerie also compared Scheffler to two legends, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson:
"He doesn’t have Tiger’s aura. He doesn’t have Phil Mickelson’s aura. When you played against them, there was something about them," he added.
Montgomerie said he wouldn't be so bothered by having to compete against Scheffler as he was when he drew Woods. The golfer said that required playing golf and playing Woods and everything around the golfers.
He continued:
"Bryson would be the same, Rory would be the same to have that aura around somebody, Scheffler, no."
However, Montgomerie didn't downplay Scheffler's achievements. He claimed that Scheffler's 2024 season, which is a little over halfway through, is the best anyone's seen since Woods was in his prime.
Scottie Scheffler halfway to breaking impressive Tiger Woods record
Scottie Scheffler's season might have taken a dip thanks to his recent struggles at the US Open, but he's still more than halfway to breaking a personal record that Tiger Woods currently holds.
The most events Woods ever won in a single season was nine, and he did that in 2000. The golf season is a little over halfway done, and Scheffler is halfway to Woods' career-best total. The record is 18, held by Byron Nelson.
There will be plenty of starts for Scottie Scheffler to try and continue earning victories, including this weekend's Travelers Championship. However, he hasn't been in the same form since his arrest.
He struggled briefly and finished T8 at the PGA Championship and despite a win, his final two rounds at the Memorial Tournament weren't good, either. He followed that up with four disappointing rounds at the US Open, so he will need to find his form again if he's to continue setting records.
