Scottie Scheffler calls golf a 'mental torture chamber' after failing to improve on Day 3 of the 2024 US Open
Scottie Scheffler's weekend at the 2024 US Open has been a nightmare so far. The Pinehurst Course #2 has proved to be one of the toughest courses of the season, and Scheffler has suffered in its wake.
After a mediocre day 1, Scottie Scheffler found himself in the middle of the leaderboard with a score of 1 over 71. However, the second day turned out to be a rather disastrous one for the World No. 1 golfer, who shot a disappointing 4 over 74.
Scheffler barely managed to make the cut with an overall score of +5. Going into day 3 of the US Open, he was left with a lot of ground to make up. Scheffler failed to improve on his result over the past few days, and carded a 1 over 71 after an underwhelming performance.
Speaking about the toughness of the course, and the impact that it was having on him, Scheffler said via the PGA Tour:
“The game of golf is a mental torture chamber at times, especially the U.S. Open. I'm having a lot of trouble reading these greens. I had a lot of putts today where I felt like I hit it really good. I looked up and they were not going the way I thought they were going to go.”
Scottie Scheffler's chances of winning the US Open have evaporated, as he has been left behind by the likes of Ludvig Aberg and Bryson DeChambeau.
Scottie Scheffler feels improvement in his play, but still does not feel fully confident at the US Open- "I just haven't been able to hit it"
Scottie Scheffler made three bogeys and two birdies on day three of the US Open, an improvement against his double bogey disaster on day 2. While he did feel more comfortable playing on the course today, he has not managed to crack it completely.
“My swing today felt a lot better than it did yesterday. I felt like the last 27 holes I've played, I've hit it really nice, but I just haven't been able to hit it quite close enough, which is difficult around this course. I haven't been able to hole the putts the last few today.”
At the end of day 2, it was Ludvig Aberg who finished at the top of the leaderboard with an overall score of -5. He was followed by Bryson DeChambeau, Matthieu Pavon and Thomas Detry in joint second place. Some of the biggest stars on the PGA Tour missed the cut, including the likes of Max Homa, Rickie Folwer, Will Zalatoris and Tiger Woods.
