Scottie Scheffler compares FedExCup to the Super Bowl, makes a potential parallel between him and the Golden State Warriors
Scottie Scheffler had a stellar PGA Tour season. The World No. 1 golfer won six events on the 2024 schedule including the Masters. The 28-year-old won the regular season title and is currently preparing for the FedExCup finale at the East Lake Golf Course this weekend.
Ahead of the Tour Championship outing, Scheffler noted that he didn’t celebrate his regular season title but ‘enjoyed’ it. Speaking in a press conference ahead of the competition, the golfer was reminded that “hardly anyone talks about” the regular season winner.
Interestingly, the two-time Masters champion entertained the question and stated that golf is a ‘different game’ compared to sports events like the NFL and NBA.
The ace golfer went on to compare the FedExCup to the Super Bowl in terms of financial success. However, he added that the two couldn’t be compared ‘in terms of history.’ Shedding light on his form and game, Scheffler said he could end up like the Golden State Warriors who had the “best regular season on the NFL ever” and lost in the Finals.
Responding to a query on what could be done ‘different to highlight’ the regular season winner, Scottie Scheffler said at East Lake, as quoted by ASAP Sports:
“Well, then you get into the discussion about other sports. It's like the Cowboys have had great regular seasons the last few years and left me heartbroken in the playoffs. But golf is a different sport. There's so many different voices and ways that you can do it. I'm not sitting here saying I have the crystal ball and I know what's best. All I can do is show up and compete and give my input where it's necessary.
"It (FedExCup) goes a lot more in depth than just identifying the best player for the entire season, and in a lot of other major sports, the best team doesn't always win. Golden State Warriors, best regular season ever and they lose in the Finals. It happens. I don't know if the FedExCup is the equivalent of our Super Bowl, but financially I would say yes, but in terms of history in the game, maybe, maybe not. You'll have to ask the players.”
Scottie Scheffler even used Keegan Bradley as an example to make his point. For the unversed, the newly appointed Ryder Cup captain entered the BMW Championship as the final man on the 50-player field.
However, he won and is currently three places behind leading man Scheffler on the FedExCup points list. The Major winner called it a “cool system in that sense.”
