Scottie Scheffler gives major update on back injury after Xander Schauffele rings alarm bells
Xander Schauffele had stated that Scottie Scheffler's back issue at the BMW Championship could be a 'threat' for other players. However, Scheffler clarified that there was not much to worry about as he was fit and good to go.
On Thursday, August 22, Scheffler fired a 1-under 71 to finish five strokes behind after the first round of the BMW Championship. During the penultimate hole of the opening round, he held his back, which gave a bit of worry to the golf fans. However, the golfer assured his fans that he was fit for the tournament.
During the post-round interview, Scheffler was asked about his back's condition.
"Oh, yeah, it's fine," he replied.
"I woke up just a little sore this morning," he added. "I had trouble kind of loosening it up. I mean, being a little bit tight it was hard for me to get through it and I was laboring most of the day to get through the ball. On 17, I was trying to hit a high draw, and that's a shot where I've really got to use a big turn, big motion. Just felt it a little bit. But other than that, all good," he added.
Xander Schauffele, who was paired alongside the World No. 1 golfer, also joked about Scheffler's injury scare given the record this season.
"He was stiff at the Masters, at The Players and had to get worked on all those times. I guess it's a bad sign for everyone else," he said.
For the uninitiated, Scottie Scheffler won both tournaments.
When will Scottie Scheffler tee off at the BMW Championship, Round 2?
Scottie Scheffler is paired with Xander Schauffele for the second round of the BMW Championship. The duo will tee off on Friday, August 23, at 1:20 p.m. ET. While Scheffler is tied for 16th following the first round, Schauffele is just three strokes back.
After the opening round, Keegan Bradley held a one-shot lead after shooting 66. Hideki Matsuyama, who won the FedEx St. Jude Championship, was in solo second.
Both Scheffler and Schauffele are top contenders for the FedEx Cup. Although the World No. 1 golfer is currently ahead in the race, the next few days will be crucial for both players as the FedEx Cup result may also influence the PGA Tour Player of the Year award.
