Scottie Scheffler ‘little nervous’ going into final round of The Players Championship
Scottie Scheffler will enter the final day of The Players Championship with a two-shot lead over Min Woo Lee. The 2022 Masters winner made an impressive improvement in the tournament after the third round. He was in sixth position after the second round and jumped to the top after Saturday's round.
However, he is nervous to start with the final round, scheduled to take place on March 12, Sunday. Speaking about his game ahead of the final round, the American golfer said:
"I just think it's a good test tee to green. I think what makes me a little nervous is the stuff kind of around. You don't really know if you're going to get a good or bad break. Anytime you're hitting fairways and greens out here it's pretty scorable, but the minute you miss a fairway, depending on where you end up in one of these little hollows or pot bunkers or something like that you can get in weird spots pretty quick."
The Players Championship is underway from March 9 and will continue until March 12 at the TPC Sawgrass. The tournament is the biggest event of the year graced by some of the best-ranked golfers in the world.
However, surprisingly, the low-ranked golfers' performance garnered tremendous attention from people. Chad Ramey topped the leaderboard in the opening round and then settled into fourth position alongside Tommy Fleetwood, Aaron Rai, and Christiaan Bezuidenhout after the third round.
Can Scottie Scheffler regain the World No.1 title?
Scottie Scheffler has the perfect opportunity to reclaim the world's number-one title if he wins the Players Championship. The American golfer already has a two-stroke lead and if he can extend that to the final round, he could be number one.
The current World No.1, Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the tournament due to unavoidable illness, while Rory McIlroy missed the cut. Scottie Scheffler impressed people with his amazing performance in the third round and is now looking forward to clinching the second title of the year.
Scottie Scheffler confessed:
"I would much rather win the tournament than get back to No. 1 in the world. So that will be my focus going into tomorrow, just going out and having a solid round of golf."
After wrapping up in the second round at 69, Scheffler started the third round with a birdie on the first hole and soon an eagle on the second to dominate the star-studded field of The Players Championship.
He sank a birdie on the fifth hole and then a bogey on the seventh. Scheffler made two consecutive birdies on the 8th and 9th holes and finished the day with two more birdies on the last two holes. He ended at 65 only to finish with a scoring deficit of seven. With a total score of under 14, Scheffler will start the fourth round two strokes ahead of Min Woo Lee.
Lee is also excited about the final round. Speaking about the game, he said:
"Tomorrow could be the biggest day of my life, but I'm going to go out there and have fun again. It's been the motto for the last three months. "
