For the unversed, a section of golf fans were confused about the PGA x LIV Showdown’s prize system ahead of the contest. Now, Scheffler has come out to join the fans in questioning the award. Having received $5 million in crypto as the prize for beating LIV rivals, the World No.1 golfer said he doesn’t ‘know a whole lot about Crypto.’
The Masters champion, who earned a whopping sum of around $60 million in prizes this year, said he’ll need to do ‘some research’ regarding crypto now. He joked about calling Crypto.com CMO Steven Kalifowitz later to ‘figure it out.’
Replying to a query on what he’ll do with the crypto prize, Scottie Scheffler said, as quoted by Bleacher Report:
“I ... don't know a while lot about crypto but this is good motivation to do some research.”
Rory McIlroy was seen cracking up after the reigning FedExCup champion’s response.
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy wins $10,000,000 in crypto
Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy took on Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau in Tuesday’s made-for-TV golf match, The Showdown, and won. Interestingly, the golfers are being rumored to be paid in millions to appear in the PGA x LIV contest. Apart from the speculated multimillion-dollar deal, the foursome also had a hefty prize of $10 million on the line.
Notably, the prize purse was dished in the currency of the evening’s sponsor, Crypto.com. Scheffler and McIlroy received the equivalent of $5 million in the crypto-based coin “CRO.” One Crypto.com coin was worth $0.1851 USD when the event concluded. The golfers with the crypto have free reign to keep the coins or cash out.
It is pertinent to note that this is the first time Scottie Scheffler is being paid in cryptocurrencies. The golfer won his second Masters and took home a gold medal at the Summer Olympics and won the Tour Championship this year. He won the PGA Tour Player of the Year title after bagging some massive paychecks in 2024. The ace golfer bagged a whopping $62 million on the course in 2024 alone.
It'll be interesting to see what the World No.1 golfer does with the massive crypto portfolio he made on Tuesday.
