Scottie Scheffler opens up on his deep bond with Robert McIntyre: “I think we were both just as passionate about winning the Ryder Cup"
Scottie Scheffler and Robert MacIntyre have a friendship that dates back to their amateur days. Despite being born on different sides of the Atlantic, they met at international events and their love of the Ryder Cup brought them closer together.
Speaking to The Scotsman in an interview published on Thursday, December 5, Scottie Scheffler opened up on how he and MacIntyre met. He also talked about the Scot as a person, labeling him as the "funny guy".
"When we played the [2017] Walker Cup, I think we were both just as passionate about winning the Ryder Cup. We have tremendous pride in our countries and the teams that we play for."
He added:
"Having those bonds in amateur golf, I know we had a dinner for all the players at the Walker Cup and I sat next to Bob [Robert MacIntyre] and we just had a good time cutting up and chatting. He's always a fun guy to mess around with just because he's fun to be around."
Scheffler also recalled MacIntyre's victory at the Scottish Open, describing it as a "really cool" moment:
"Yeah, watching him win the Scottish Open was pretty cool,” Scheffler said. “That was pretty fun for all of us to watch. Getting to watch him win his home championship was really cool. You saw the emotion, and Bob's such a tremendous guy that it's fun to see him have that success."
Robert MacIntyre clinched two notable victories on the PGA Tour in 2024, his rookie season on the American circuit. He won the RBC Canadian Open with his father as his caddie, and then won his home Open, the Scottish Open, to become the first Scottish golfer to win it since Colin Montgomery in 1999.
