Scottie Scheffler's Nike hat worn during infamous PGA Championship arrest sold for $2,357 for charity
Scottie Scheffler is at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta to play in the TOUR Championship. He leads the field as the top-ranked golfer in the FedEx Cup, but in the process of playing in the playoffs, he took time out to do some philanthropic work.
Scheffler donated a Nike-branded cap which will be auctioned off to benefit the Kids Cancer Alliance. Not just any cap, it is the one he was wearing on May 17 when he was arrested outside the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
According to a report by local television station WLKY News Louisville, the cap was sold for $2,375 as part of a group of items auctioned off by Kids For Alliance as a fundraiser.
The report also noted that the buyer of Scottie Scheffler's cap received three golf balls signed by the World No. 1.
Scottie Scheffler's arrest on his way to Valhalla Golf Club, to play in the second round of the PGA Championship, has been one of the most notorious events of the entire 2024 season.
He was stopped by police outside the facility due to a car accident. According to a statement, Scottie Scheffler did not understand the instructions given to him at the time and attempted to pass the police checkpoint.
Scheffler was traveling in a courtesy car emblazoned with the emblems of the high-profile event he was attending at Valhalla.
The player spent several hours in custody at the Lousville police station. He was later released and was able to arrive in time for his tee time. Despite the difficult time he had gone through, Scottie Scheffler scored 65 for the round.
Scottie Scheffler's Hat Collection
Hats are not just any part of Scottie Scheffler's outfit. For many years, they have been an important part of his preparation rituals, so much so that he keeps many of them in his gym.
Scheffler himself explained this last June (via AP):
“When I was a kid and I got a cool hat, I would wear it the whole summer and I would sweat through the hat. And they're just disgusting and gross and I hang ‘em in my gym."
He added:
"So when I’m back there working out, I remind myself that just because I got to where I am now, it wasn't just because it happened. I remember all the work that I put in, all the balls that I hit, all the amount of time I spent out there sweating in the sun and putting in the time and the effort in order to become good.”
Scheffler is coming off the best season of his career with six wins, including a major (the Masters Tournament). He crowned his season by winning the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
