Scottie Scheffler sends "one word message" as he prepares for big event
The much-awaited 'Showdown' featuring Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka has finally teed off on Tuesday. The event is taking place at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas in a perfect start to the Christmas season.
The exhibition contest has been heavily promoted in recent months by the PGA Tour as well LIV Golf. Member of the former Tour, Scheffler recently took to his Instagram stories to post a final countdown to the event. He also reshared the PGA Tour's post announcing that 'The Showdown' will be raising charitable donations for First Tee.
Founded in 1997 by then-PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem, First Tee is a non-profit organization that aims to improve children's life skills through golf lessons.
Scottie Scheffler wrote "Tonight" on his story with a strong arm emoji promote the announcement.
Scheffler will partner up with Rory McIlroy to take down Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in this PGA Tour vs LIV Golf faceoff.
Did Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy win the first session?
'The Showdown' takes place after The Match or The Netflix Cup, but features a completely different format. The made-for-TV event will see an 18-hole match play divided into three sections.
The first six holes will be played in fourball, the next four in foursomes and the final four holes will see singles fixtures. The first session has ended with Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy winning three holes and tying for one. The seventh hole or the first hole of the second session has also ended in a tie.
Going into Las Vegas, the PGA tour duo were being touted as the possible winners with the odds being in their favor. With the way the event is progressing those predictions don't seem too wrong. However, DeChambeau and Koepka can't be dismissed as the pro golfers can always have an ace up their sleeves.
The rivalry between the two Tours has been brewing since a long time and it is coming to an ultimatum with 'The Showdown,' at least in spirit. As McIlroy rightly said in an interview with Golf Digest,
"There is a bit more buzz because of what’s happened in golf the last two years. It’s more competitive and doesn’t feel as gimmicky,"
Scheffler also spoke about the camarderie the four golfers share:
"When we see each other on tour or at majors, we’re in our little world, our little bubble. Here, you’re just cutting up, hanging out pretty much the whole time. It’s always fun getting to know guys in a more relaxed environment. That’s what’s fun about the team events,"
US fans can tune into the exciting action at TNT, TBS or TruTV. The primetime show can also be streamed via the Discovery Channel app.
