Shriners opts out of PGA Tour’s Vegas event’s title sponsorship just days after J.T. Poston’s win
Shriners has reportedly stepped down as the title sponsor of the PGA Tour's Las Vegas event. The announcement came just a few days after the conclusion of this year's edition.
The most recent Shriners Children's Open concluded last week, with J.T. Poston becoming the latest winner in Las Vegas. He posted a one-shot victory over Doug Ghim to claim his third PGA Tour title.
On Thursday, August 24, ESPN reported that Shriners had withdrawn as sponsors for the PGA Tour's Las Vegas event after 18 years. However, no reason was provided from their side.
"We have enjoyed a tremendous 18 years as the host and title sponsor of the Shriners Children's Open," Bob Roller, the vice president of sports for Shriners, said as per the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "The opportunity to tell our incredible stories of the more than 1.6 million children that have received care from Shriners was, and always is, our primary goal."
The Las Vegas tournament began in 1983 as a five-round event named the Panasonic Las Vegas Pro-Celebrity Classic, with Fuzzy Zoeller emerging as the first winner.
The following year, the tournament's name was changed to the Panasonic Las Vegas Invitational, and Denis Watson became the winner. This was the first time any PGA Tour event had a purse of $1 million.
Starting in 2004, the event was reduced to 72 holes, and Shriners acquired the title sponsorship in 2008. From 2008 to 2012, the tournament was titled the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, as the popular singer and actor hosted the event. From 2013 to 2020, it was called the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open before being renamed the Shriners Children's Open.
Jim Furyk is the only three-time champion at the PGA Tour's Las Vegas event, with wins in 1995, 1998, and 1999. Kevin Na (2011, 2019), Martin Laird (2009, 2020) and Tom Kim (2022, 2023) have each won twice.
