“Tears rolling down my eyes” - Nelly Korda shares heartwarming story of little kids making her cry at her low moment
Nelly Korda has accumulated numerous successes during the 2024 season that have put her at the forefront of world golf. She has also been one of the key figures in the rise of women's sports in recent years.
Her sporting results and extraordinary charisma have made Nelly Korda a role model, especially for young female golfers. Recently, Korda was asked to share her perspective on the subject, and she did so through an anecdote.
Nelly Korda made the comments in an interview for the YouTube channel of one of her sponsors, T-Mobile. The interview was filmed during the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in June.
Nelly Korda told the following story:
"Last week, it was so funny, I was not playing well in my first round [at the Meijer LPGA Classic], I was like four over through four holes I think, and these little kids were coming up to me and like giving me fist pumps and they were like 'good job, great playing' and I'm like tears rolling down my eyes, 'thank you'"
She added:
"It always made me smile and always put me in a better mood. And seeing them out there like they helped me as much as maybe I helped them. So it's amazing to see how the women's games are growing across the world and I'm happy to just be 1% of that." [13:02 - 13:38]
Nelly Korda's 2024 season recap
Nelly Korda has played in 12 LPGA Tour events in the 2024 season, making nine cuts. She has finished in the top 10 seven times, including six victories, five of them in a row.
Korda began the season at the Tournament of Champions, where she tied for 16th at 2-under. A week later, she won her first tournament of the year, the LPGA Drive On Championship, shooting 11-under.
This win was special for several reasons. Korda won on her home course in Bradenton, Florida. It was a hard-fought victory, as she had to come back from three shots down with two holes to play and then beat the previous week's champion, Lydia Ko, in a playoff.
After this victory, Korda surprised everyone by taking seven weeks off, including a visit to her relatives in Prague. Upon her return, she immediately won her second trophy of the year at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship.
She followed that up with three straight victories at the Ford Championship, the T-Mobile Match Play and the Chevron Championship, the first Major of the season. Three weeks later, Korda finished T7 in the Cognizant Founders.
A week later, Korda won her sixth event of the season, the Mizuho Americas Open. Things started to go wrong from there as she missed three cuts in a row, including two Major championships.
Korda spent the last few weeks playing in France, where she tied for 26th at the Amundi Evian Championship and tied for 22nd at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Her next start will be at the AIG Women's Open, the fifth Major of the season.
