“The type of player that you have to keep your eye on” – Analyst says Presidents Cup skipper Jim Furyk shouldn't miss out on PGA Tour winner
Starting September 24th, 2024, Team USA Captain Jim Furyk will look to retain the Presidents Cup that Team USA won in 2022. At his disposal, Furyk has some fine players like Scottie Scheffler and Wyndham Clark to name a few. However, as per a golf analyst, Furyk must not miss out on a 25-year-old PGA Tour winner, Davis Thompson.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, "The Smylie Show", golf analyst Smylie Kaufman said Jim Furyk must not miss out on 25-year-old Davis Thompson. Kaufman noted that Thompson is the type of player that you have to keep your eye on. Detailing the reason behind his statement, Kaufman said:
"I think this is the type of player that you have to keep your eye on if you're Jim Furyk. I know he's not quite as close as you'd like him to be if you're Jim Furyk. But when you look at some of his advanced metrics in his stats, like Strokes gain total, seventh on the PGA tour this year. And his around-the-green stats: fifth. So we're talking about a guy that that can ball strike it. he can chip. The biggest issue is the putter. And this year he's 61st in putting. So it's not even that bad he drives it long the driving distance is 304 yards." [29:54 onwards]
Smylie Kaufman further added that this is why he would like to see players like Davis Thompson get into the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup teams. Further, he claimed that he does not see a player like Davis Thompson slowing down.
