“They have the audacity to say we don’t know anything”: Paige Spiranac lashes out at critics commenting on her current handicap
Paige Spiranac shared with her million followers on X an image detailing her current handicap. As long as anyone is a member of a USGA-authorized golf club and the organization, they can get an official handicap. That's what the former pro golfer did, and her handicap is +3.4. This is fairly low, as a small handicap indicates that the holder is fairly close to the average level of professional golf.
Still, fans in the responses to Spiranac's tweet attempted to make fun of her for the handicap. Samantha Marks pointed out the irony of many people missing what the plus sign implies for Spiranac, saying:
"Ok, so most of y'all don't know what the plus sign means? Y'all are so embarrassing."
That prompted a response from Spiranac, who said:
"And then they have the audacity to say we don’t know anything about golf."
Having a handicap is normal for a non-professional golfer, even one who used to play briefly on the LPGA Tour. Spiranac is far removed from that and mostly focuses on content creation for her massive social media channels.
Despite the lack of tournament play and perhaps lack of practice in general, the handicap she currently has is still fairly low. She has a higher handicap than most pro-level players but it is significantly lower than celebrity handicaps.
Paige Spiranac continues to work back to high level
Paige Spiranac was once a promising young golfer heading for stardom on the LPGA Tour. She eventually had to walk away after competitive golf had a terrible effect on her mental health. This is something she revealed several weeks ago in an honest X post confirming her insecurities.
She said:
"I played junior golf, college golf, and a year professionally. After that stretch, I mentally couldn’t handle playing golf and especially keeping score. I equated my score to my self-worth. I know it sounds silly but competitive golf really beat me up emotionally. But I’ve found that passion again! I’ve started tracking my scores and grinding on my game."
On April 29, she began tracking scores again. Then, she started working with coaches to fix aspects of her game, even partnering with Bryson DeChambeau to get some help on her swing. Now, she's inching ever closer to the high level of golf she was once at. Her newly revealed handicap is evidence of as much.
Paige Spiranac has not said she wants to play professionally again. She's become a force to be reckoned with in the content creation space, boasting a lot of social media followers on multiple platforms and carving out a nice career. Nevertheless, golf is a passion of hers that she has rediscovered and is working to hone.
