“They are chanting ‘Celine! Celine!’” – Lydia Ko describes the experience of playing in front of 30,000 people at the Olympics
Lydia Ko is playing at the Olympics this week, having completed two rounds. After the second round, she stands in third place on the leaderboard. The game is led by Morgane Metraux, who retained her position, with Celine Boutier finding herself sixth on the leaderboard.
Lydia Ko joined a press conference after the second round of the Olympics and was asked about the atmosphere at the Olympics. Ko replied that the audience chanted Celine’s name and she heard it, given that she teed off after Boutier’s group. In addition to that, she added that the experience was cool and that the fans supported each of the players.
“It's really cool. Obviously played the group behind Celine these past couple days, and at first, I was like, what are they chanting and I realise they are chanting "Celine! Celine!...I heard "Victor" from a distance on Sunday. So the people are super excited to support their fellow Frenchmen. But at the same time, the fans here have been so great because they have been supporting each and every one of us. I've honestly loved it,” Ko said ( via ASAP Sports).
She further stated how this could be her last Olympics appearance and the cheers from the crowd led to tears in her eyes.
“It almost brought tears to my eyes yesterday on the first hole because this could potentially be my last Olympics, and to have it in front of this mass amount of 30,000 people, it's an unbelievable feeling…I don't know if it's because it's more contrasted to Tokyo just because of the situation we had there. It was such a cool atmosphere, and I'm excited for all of them to return these next couple days because I think this is truly a celebration of golf and a celebration of sport,” Lydia Ko said.
