“This won’t grow the game”: Fans react to Paige Spiranac wanting people to get onboard with recent changes in golf
Paige Spiranac, who was named Maxim's Sexiest Woman Alive, recently shared her opinion on the new changes made by the PGA Tour.
The American tour announced on Wednesday, March 1, that they will be introducing eight new designated events for the best golfers in the world. The new event will have a small-sized field with an increase in prize money.
Speaking about it, the golfer-turned-social media influencer tweeted:
"We constantly talk about growing the game of golf then b**ch when actual change happens. You can’t grow doing the same exact thing. Change has to happen. Some things will work, some won’t but you have to try new things."
Her fans replied to her post in the comments section. They jotted:
"Good take, but golf will never change till the old men/women get out of their own way. Keep up the good fight, at least you're trying!"
"I’m down in Gulf Shores Alabama and courses last at this time were $50 and they just raised them to $92… not even that great of courses… this won’t grow the game!"
"Fewer player opportunities at biggest money events & less golf for people to watch. I'm missing the 'growing the game' part. Growing the bank accounts of the guys who already are qualified and making bank. The 80-125 w/status, those w/partial & Korn-Ferry guys w/limited growth."
"Some people don't like change but change in anything is growth if the change is in a good way."
The designated events are specially meant for the best golfers in the world.
PGA Tour designated events eligibility
The PGA Tour has announced various eligibility criteria for participating in the designated events scheduled for the 2024 season.
Here are the eligibility criteria to compete in the events:
- The Top 50 players from the prior year FedExCup standings through the FedExCup Playoffs;
- The Top 10 players, not otherwise eligible, from the current year FedExCup standings (using the previous year’s FedExCup standings through the conclusion of the fall events for any early season events);
- The Top 5 players, not otherwise eligible, earning the most FedExCup points through each “collection” of standard events.
- Current year tournament winners, not otherwise eligible, of full FedExCup point events prior to the designated event;
- PGA Tour members among the Top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking;
- Four sponsor exemptions restricted to PGA TOUR members.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan believes the new event will act as a bridge to the future of golf. He mentioned in his interview that it will enhance the quality of full-field events. Monahan said:
"These smaller, Designated event fields will not only deliver substantial, can’t-miss tournaments to our fans at important intervals throughout the season, but they will also enhance the quality of Full-Field events. Together, this approach provides a schedule that is cohesive, compelling, consequential and with clarity for fans, players and sponsors alike.”
LIV Golf also congratulated the PGA Tour for the changes. They tweeted:
"Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Congratulations PGA Tour. Welcome to the future."
