Tiger Woods details the message he sent Rory McIlroy after ‘difficult’ loss at Pinehurst: “I’m your friend”
Rory McIlroy was close to winning his first Major championship since 2014 at the 2024 US Open. However, after the end of Round 4 at the ever-difficult Pinehurst No. 2 course, he found himself in the second spot. He had finished the US Open in second place in 2023 as well,
After his difficult loss at the 2024 US Open, prominent athletes like Michael Jordan and Rafael Nadal reached out to McIlroy. Ahead of the 2024 Open Championship, golfer Tiger Woods was also asked in a press conference if he had contacted the Irishman.
Woods said he that waited for a week before texting McIlroy and revealed what he said to him:
"Just basically, 'here, as you know, I'm your friend. I know this is a difficult moment. We've all been there as champions. We all lose.'"
"Unfortunately, it just happened. The raw emotion of it is still there. It's going to be there for, I'm sure, some time. The faster he's able to get back on the horse and get back into contention like he did last week, the better it is for him," Woods added.
While Rory McIlroy did have a disappointing end to his US Open campaign, he was not the only one. Tiger Woods also did not have a great US Open this year as he failed to make the cut. Woods scored 74-73 in the first two rounds at Pinehurst Golf Course No. 2 in North Carolina.
