Tiger Woods reminisces about his time as Presidents Cup captain as Jim Furyk begins his tenure
Tiger Woods' charity organization shared a video of Woods recalling his experience captaining the American team at the Presidents Cup. Woods' post came just hours before Jim Furyk began his tenure at the helm of Team USA.
In a video shared on TGR Foundation's X(formerly twitter) account, the golfer recounted his experience as a captain/player in the 2019 edition of the Presidents Cup. He is wearing clothes from the Heritage line of products from his Sun Day Red brand, launched earlier this month.
Woods said success would not have been possible without the team's faith in itself. He said,
"It was very complicated and complex but we got through it as a team, and I kept stressing that we're going to have to do this as a team. There's no one individual, there's no one magic spark, there's none of that stuff." [0:11 - 0:22]
The team led by Tiger Woods won the 2019 edition of the Presidents Cup 16-14. Justin Thomas was the team's top scorer with 3.5 points in five matches, with three wins, one tie and one loss.
Tiger Woods' performance in the event included three wins in the same number of matches. Woods walking across the green that year to greet his opponent Abraham Ancer before the final putt entered the hole became an iconic moment in the sport.
Tiger Woods and the 2024 Presidents Cup
Tiger Woods had no chance of making the U.S. team for the Presidents Cup due to his lack of top-level play. Woods only played five tournaments during the 2024 season as he continues to recover from foot injuries.
However, some observers thought Jim Furyk might have called Woods to listen to his advice, at least in terms of the free picks. That did not happen, and Furyk said he had not spoken to Woods about the subject at all.
Furyk said (via ASAP Sports),
"Tiger and I have been friendly over the years, but I didn't give him a call to talk about the picks at all. I think the last time that he was -- correct me if I'm wrong, I think Australia [2019] is probably the last time he sat in as one of the captains, I believe."
He added,
"I'm sure Davis [Love III] leaned on him a little bit for Charlotte [2022 edition], but from afar."
Woods has played in nine editions of the Presidents Cup, including 2019. As a member of the American team, he won seven titles with one victory and one tie.
His record in th event reads 44 matches played with 29 wins, one draw and 15 losses. He contributed 27.5 points to his team throughout his career.
