Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy led TGL to release documentary days ahead of inaugural season
The Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy TGL Golf League is less than 100 days away. The league will kick off its inaugural season on 7 January 2025, but a few days before, a documentary series will launch about one of its six teams.
It's Boston Common Golf, the first of the teams to have a full roster at the start of the league. The documentary series about the team will have five episodes and be released in December 2024.
The trailer for the documentary series suggests that it will provide details on how both the league and Boston Common Golf came into being.
The documentary is produced by Comcast Business, and it appears that team captain Rory McIlroy will lead the series.
Major champions Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama, and Keegan Bradley complete the Boston Common Golf roster. Tyrrell Hatton was originally part of the team but was dropped when he signed with LIV Golf.
Originally the TGL league was set to go on floors in January of 2024; however, just months prior to its inaugural season, the tech league suffered a setback; in November 2023, the roof of the Sofi Center collapsed, which resulted in the postponement of the tech-infused league for over a year.
TGL: An overview of the format, rules, teams and more
The general idea of the TGL Golf League is to bring the game of golf indoors while retaining as much of its essence as possible. This is achieved through the use of technology, as the league is played on a specially designed simulator.
The simulator has a 64 x 53-foot screen and a total putting green area of 41 square meters.
The league format will be 15 holes, nine of which will be threesomes and six of which will be singles. Shots will be timed and each player will have 40 seconds to complete their shot.
The regular season will consist of 15 matches that will be televised in prime time on ESPN. In addition, the SoFi Center will have a capacity for 2,000 fans to enjoy the event live. The league will be decided by a playoff series.
Each of the six teams will have four members, with only three playing in each match. In addition to Boston Common Golf, the league includes Atlanta Drive GC, Jupiter Links GC, Los Angeles GC, New York GC and The Bay GC.
The league's roster features some of the top players on the PGA Tour, including project leaders Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. The cases of Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Sahith Theegala, Collin Morikawa, and Ludvig Aberg, among others, stand out.
The 24 TGL players have combined for 230 PGA Tour victories and 33 major championships. 13 of the league members have won at least one major during their careers.
