Tiger Woods & Rory McIlroy’s golf league partner with $53.94B-worth Canadian media giant: Reports

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's virtual golf series, TGL, has reportedly signed a media rights deal with Sportsnet in Canada. The PGA Tour players have collaborated on this brand-new golf series, which was initially slated to start in 2024. However, it was later postponed to 2025 due to the venue being damaged by a power failure in November 2023.

As the series gears up to start its first season, it has become the talk of the town. Recently, golf analyst Josh Carpenter reported that Sportsnet, owned by Rogers Communications, which has an enterprise value of $53.94 billion (according to Stock Analysis), has agreed to a deal with the series for its viewership in Canada.

Sharing the news on his X account, Carpenter wrote:

"@TGL has a new media-rights agreement in Canada with @Sportsnet that's being announced later today. Additionally, sources familiar said the league has been having discussions with several Canadian groups about possible expansion."

Notably, ESPN has also signed a media deal with TGL for its broadcasts in the USA. They have signed a multi-year deal with the new series. Speaking about the deal, Rosalyn Durant, Executive Vice President of Programming and Acquisition at ESPN, said, via Sports Media:

"Innovation and creativity are core to our ESPN mission and TGL will bring those tenets to life for golf fans. TGL is going to be a two-hour presentation unlike anything you have seen before. All players will wear live microphones and viewers will have unprecedented access during competition. It’s an exciting landscape for presenting golf and we look forward to bringing it to fans.”

The tech-infused series will kick off in January 2025 with its first season. There will be 15 events in a season, taking place on Monday and Tuesday nights.
