Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL introduce ‘Social Divots’ for fans’ ‘wildest doubts’
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's upcoming tech-infused golf series, TGL, has exclusively launched a "Social Divots" section to address the burning questions of the public. The PGA Tour players have collaborated with TMRW Sports' Mike McCarley to kick off this brand-new golf series.
Originally scheduled to begin in January 2024, the series was postponed to 2025 after its venue, SoFi Stadium, collapsed in November 2023. Now, TGL will start with its inaugural season in January 2025.
As the series gears up for its first season, TGL recently announced its new section called "Social Divots," hosted by Roger Steele. This segment will answer people's questions related to the series. Announcing the segment on October 22, Steele said:
"Welcome to Social Divots, a social series where we dive into your burning questions, hot takes, and even your wildest doubts about TGL presented by SoFi. You got questions? Confused on how the league works? Don’t think it’ll work at all? Bring the heat and drop your thoughts in the comments. But fair warning: if you’re bold enough to comment, we are bold enough to respond. So drop us a line, and we’ll be matching your same energy."
Interestingly, the segment kicked off with Roger Steele answering a fan's question. A fan asked:
"WTF is this?"
Replying to the fan, Steele said:
"That’s a great question. I’ll tell you what it is, Jacob. It’s 3-vs-3 team golf. Six teams representing six different cities across the country. You got a regular season that rolls into the playoffs, that roll into the best-of-three championship series. All played in a brand-new SoFi center state-of-the-art stadium, built exclusively for TGL. And every match is just two hours, Jacob, two hours, which I hear is the perfect window to keep your budding case of ADD at bay."
Notably, TGL consists of six different teams, each with four players. The teams also have their owners. The series will start in January 2025 and will stream on ESPN.
Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods's TGL unveils its unique format
TGL recently unveiled its format on its X (formerly Twitter) account. The series event will have a 15-hole format in two sessions, triples and singles. However, only three of the four players from each team will take part in the tournament.
In the first session, the three players of each team will take alternate shots, one after the other. In the second session, players will compete head-to-head on two holes each.
This means each player from one team will compete against one player from the other team in a head-to-head match on two holes. So, three players from the teams will play on the remaining six holes, two each.
The team whose player takes the fewest shots on a hole will win a point on that hole, and the team with the most points after 15 holes will win the tournament. Moreover, if the score results in a tie after 15 holes, overtime will determine the winner.
The matches will take place on Monday and Tuesday nights for two hours. The series will conclude with the season's semifinals and final matches toward the end.
