"Today was crazy, that was mental"- Leader Matt Wallace left stumped after 'brutal' weather conditions at Omega European Masters affect play
Matt Wallace, after taking the lead at the 2024 Omega European Masters, opened up about his performance in the third round of the event on Saturday, September 7. The weather largely affected play during the third round, and because of the difficult conditions, the Englishman ended up shooting a round of 73.
Despite the challenging conditions, thanks to his round of 62 on the second day, Matt Wallace still took the lead in the game and is in contention to win the title, with hope to end his six-year winless streak on the European Tour.
Following the round, Wallace opened up about his game in an interview with Sky Sports. He reflected on the challenging conditions on Saturday and said:
"Where do I start? Brutal, hard. Really hard. I hit the ball I felt just as good, hit my areas - they were the wrong areas by the looks of it. Some holes like 17 were potentially impossible," he said.
"I said the other day it was cold and windy, but that (today) was crazy, that was mental. The greens were fantastic but just really fast as well," Wallace added.
Notably, Matt Wallace will tee off four strokes ahead of Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, who has a solo second-place finish, for the final fourth round on Sunday, September 8.
On Saturday, Wallace started his game with a par on the first hole but then shot a bogey on the second. He carded three bogeys and a birdie on the front nine and three bogeys and two birdies on the back nine to finish with a total of 11-under.
What time will Matt Wallace tee off on Sunday at the Omega European Masters?
Wallace will tee off for the final round of the 2024 Omega European Masters at 6:30 a.m. ET (11:30 a.m. BST) on the first tee at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club. Play has already begun, with Rhys Enoch teeing off at 1:15 a.m. ET. He has played eight holes so far, recording three birdies, one bogey, and a double bogey. However, Wallace's group has yet to start their round.
