Tony Finau confesses his ‘love’ for team golf at the Presidents Cup
Tony Finau is playing in the Presidents Cup for the US team this week. It is one of the few occasions where professional golfers get to play team golf. Reflecting on his love for the format, Finau shared the perks of team golf in a press conference.
Finau joined an interview after the Thursday fourball, where the golfer was asked to share thoughts on team concepts. In response, he explained that he loved the format of matchplay and strokeplay and how it challenged him.
“I love team golf. It's an atmosphere out here, match play versus stroke play. I love the challenge, the emotions. The momentum changes in match play, but I feel like my attitude serves me well, just staying positive no matter what. When you've got a partner like Xander, it's a lot of fun out there, no question,” Finau said, via ASAP Sports.
Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele won a fourball match for Team USA against international squad mates Byeong Hun An and Jason Day. Finau and Schauffele triumphed with 1UP. Schauffele was asked to share his thoughts on the closing birdies on holes 17 and 18.
“We knew what we were supposed to do. Tony got the party started on that front nine and keeping it close and then getting that lead. He had my back all day. I figured it's my turn to have his back,” Schauffele replied.
The team US won all five matches against the international team in the Thursday fourballs.
When do Tony Finau and others tee off for the Friday round of the Presidents Cup?
The Friday round will include five foursome matches and on the second day, Finau is paired with Wyndham Clark (USA) to start at 1:47 pm against Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes (International). Next to them, Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley (USA) will tee off at 2:01 pm against Si Woo Kim and Byeong Hun An (International).
Xander Schauffele paired with Patrick Cantlay (USA) has the first tee time at 1:05 pm and they'll play against Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im (International). Here's the list of tee times and pairings for the second round of the Presidents Cup:
Match 1: (1:05 p.m.): Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im (International) against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele (USA)
Match 2: (1:19 p.m.): Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith (International) against Collin Morikawa & Sahith Theegala (USA)
Match 3: (1:33 p.m.): Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Jason Day (International) against Max Homa and Brian Harman (USA)
Match 4: (1:47 p.m.): Corey Connors and Mackenzie Hughes (International) against Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau (USA)
Match 5: (2:01 p.m.): Si Woo Kim and Byeong Hun An (International) against Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley (USA)
