Tony Finau’s last 5 PGA Tour outings explored amid speculations of LIV Golf defection
Tony Finau played the 2024 season on the PGA Tour but after the golfer withdrew from the Hero World Challenge for undisclosed reasons, the golf world started speculating that Finau might switch to LIV league. Last year, similar speculations started for Jon Rahm and the Spaniard defected to the Saudi-backed league by making the news official wearing a LIV Golf jacket.
Losing Rahm, who was then the World No. 3 was no less a shock for the PGA Tour, and now World No. 26 Finau is also suspected to move to Greg Norman's squad.
Finau’s last five PGA Tour appearances were at the Open Championship, the 3M Open, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the BMW Championship, and the Tour Championship. Out of the five appearances, his best finish was at the 3M Open, where he landed at T12 with a score of 11 under 273 and he only missed the cut at the Open Championship, where he had two rounds of 71 and 81, respectively.
At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the BMW Championship, and the TOUR Championship, Tony Finau finished at T16 with 8 under 272, T13 with 5 under 283, and T23 with 6 under 281, respectively. He had five top-10 finishes in the PGA Tour, including a T2 at the Texas Children's Houston Open, a T3 at the U.S. Open, a T5 at the Travelers Championship, and a T6 at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Tony Finau was speculated to move to LIV Golf in 2023
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the Hero World Challenge this year but Tony Finau isn't a part of the field. Finau withdrew from the tournament due to unspecified reasons and that spiked rumors of his defection to LIV Golf. But, this isn't the first time such rumors started regarding him.
Last year, Finau's name was associated with a LIV Golf switch. At first, the golfer didn't dispel the rumors, telling reporters (via FoxSports):
“I have nothing to say right now. I haven’t heard anything."
Later, when he was asked further about the topic, Finau said:
“No, not yet. I haven’t let anything marinate other than just playing right now.”
Tony Finau hasn't commented on the 2024 rumors about the LIV switch. But he hasn't skipped the Hero World Challenge in the last five years.
Finau finished at T4 in the 2023 Hero World Challenge with 15 under 273, at T7 in the 2022 Hero World Challenge with 6 under 282, and at T7 in the 2021 Hero World Challenge with 13 under 275. There was no tournament in 2020 and the American landed at T10 at the 2019 Hero World Challenge with 7 under 281.
