"Turns into a little snot", "Back into his shell:" Golf insiders react to Bryson DeChambeau's behavior when losing The Showdown
Bryson DeChambeau is easily one of the best golfers in the world right now. When it was announced that he, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, and Scottie Scheffler were taking part in 'The Showdown', fans expected a clash of titans.
However, what eventually emerged was a lukewarm match play with no edge-of-the-seat action. PGA Tour stars McIlroy and Scheffler had taken an early lead by winning the first session of fourballs. The duo went on to secure a landslide win over Koepka and DeChambeau.
'The Showdown' was heavily promoted and highly anticipated for the past few months. It was touted as the ultimate PGA Tour vs LIV Golf match ahead of the merger deal that the two tours are negotiating. But McIlroy and Scheffler didn't get much thrilling competition from their opponents.
All four golfers were mic'd up for the event as TNT Sports reported the live coverage to viewers. However, in the middle of the contest, Bryson DeChambeau removed his earpiece. The move essentially restricted the broadcasters from covering the event up close.
The 31-year-old has become quite the YouTube sensation, garnering 1.65 million subscribers over the years. His series, 'Break 50', has especially received a lot of love and appreciation from fans.
However, CBS reporter Rick Gehman believed that his stardom was the reason for his behavior on Tuesday. He said (via The Golfing Gazette):
"Bryson has become very, very popular in the last year or two and unfortunately the thing which always rubs me the wrong way is that he is so likeable when things are going his way. But as soon as something goes wrong, he kind of turns into a little snot, quite honestly."
Fellow CBS broadcaster Patrick McDonald added:
"He goes back into his shell. He goes back into hiding into that jacket of his. It’s a made-for-TV thing; you are the perfect person for it; you are the best golfer in the world in this situation. And you take off your AirPods, you take off your mic; if I was the people behind it, I would probably be a little irked by that."

CBS reporter Rick Gehman talked about Bryson DeChambeau's behavior when "things go sideways". He said (via The Golfing Gazette):
"Just a little corny. A little more than my liking. When things are going awesome, it’s great, but I hate when things go sideways for him because we get that kind of crybaby version of himself."
The reigning US Open champion will next be seen when LIV Golf starts its 2025 season in February in Riyadh.
