WATCH: Ball drop shows ‘brutal’ nature of the greens at Pinehurst set for US Open
Many players are expecting the Pinehurst greens to be brutal for the US Open in 2024. One such demonstration of the nature of the greens was recently shared by the PGA Tour.
The US Open 2024 is set to take place at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. The first round will kick off on Thursday, June 13. This will be the fourth time the US national championship will be played at Pinehurst. The greens here possess some demons, which can create a pretty tricky situation for the players this week.
On Tuesday, June 11, the PGA Tour shared a video to demonstrate the behavior of the Pinehurst greens. In the video, one person drops the ball on the green, but it doesn't stop there and starts moving pretty quickly before it falls into the bunker.
Several greens are designed with a sideways slope, and a quick surface will roll the ball further than usual, which might cost players a shot or two on each hole at the US Open.
Several players have spoken about the nature of the greens ahead of the season's third major. Defending champion Wyndham Clark also expressed his concerns over the much-discussed greens at Pinehurst.
"I mean, they are extremely fast," he said in a pre-event press conference on Monday, June 10. "If they get any firmer and faster, the greens, I mean, they'd be borderline. They already are borderline."
Keegan Bradley said the greens were upside down from what they usually play.
"They're like a big bowl so it's tough," he told Golf Channel.
Webb Simpson echoed similar sentiments and said that the greens were quite fast.
"It kind of feels like they have full control over the greens," he said. "Whatever they want to do, they probably can't get them too much quicker. I think some of these putts would be even harder. Balls would go off the green."
