WATCH: Charlie Woods makes a near-perfect shot at the US Junior Amateur practice
Charlie Woods is set to make his debut at the US Junior Amateur this week. The tournament is scheduled from July 22 to 27 at Oakland Hills Country Club, and ahead of the event, the young Woods was spotted practicing his game.
Nuclr Golf shared a video clip on X (formerly Twitter) of Woods' practice session at the US Junior Amateur. The clip shows Woods hitting an approach shot to the green. They shared the video with a caption that read:
"Charlie Woods fires a dart during a practice round at the U.S. Junior Amateur. (Filmed with an iPhone 4)"
Woods won the qualifying round to secure a spot at the US Junior Amateur. His father Tiger Woods has won the tournament three times in his career, and the young golfer is set to follow in his father's footsteps.
Charlie had previously competed in the qualifying round for the Cognizant Classic, a PGA Tour event, but he struggled on the course and did not qualify. However, the young golfer had a better outing in the qualifying round of the US Junior Amateur at the Eagle Trace Golf Club.
Speaking of his performance in the qualifying round, Woods said (via Golf.com):
"I didn’t play great my first two holes, but I played really good for the last 16. I just told myself not to make any more bogeys or doubles and I took advantage of some nice birdie looks when I had them. Putting was my biggest strength today. I made a lot of putts when I needed to.”
Reportedly, his father will join him this week. Tiger played at The Open Championship in Royal Troon last week but did not make the cut and, reportedly, soon after took a flight to the Detroit area to join his son at the US Junior Amateur.
"I want to win USGA championships"- Charlie Woods
Charlie Woods qualified for the US Junior Amateur last month and stated that he wants to win USGA championships. His father, Tiger Woods, has recorded six consecutive USGA victories.
Tiger won his maiden USGA event at the US Junior in 1991 when he was 15. More than 30 years later, his son Charlie is gearing up for his USGA event debut at the US Junior Amateur, also at the age of 15.
“The USGA means a lot to me. I want to win USGA championships and hopefully one day the U.S. Open," Charlie Woods said (via Golf Digest).
His father won both US Junior and US Amateur titles three times during his junior career. Interestingly, he also won the US Open three times after turning pro.
When asked if he thought about his son playing the US Junior Amateur while competing at The Open Championship last week, he had this to say: (via ASAP Sports):
"When I'm working, I'm working. When I'm at home, away from the golf course, yeah, I do talk to him. We're working on getting his game right. Wish I could see him hit balls or play and get ready like we normally do for an event, but I'm a little bit busy this week."
As his participation at the Open Championship concluded early, Tiger can go on to watch his son play this week. After this, fans can expect the father–son duo to play together at the PNC Championship later this year.
