WATCH: Max Homa hits the first eagle of round 4 of the 2024 BMW Championship
Max Homa was one of the first players to start the final round of the 2024 BMW Championship. The fourth day has been the best of the tournament for him, and he even made one of the most spectacular plays of the early stages of the round.
Homa made the first eagle of the fourth round of the BMW Championship. The sequence was posted by the PGA Tour on its social media profiles.
The play occurred on the 592-yard par-5 8th hole. Max Homa hit a 345-yard tee shot down the fairway. From there, he hit a spectacular 242-yard iron shot to the green. The ball was only 8 feet, 2 inches from the hole and Homa made a clean putt for eagle.
Up to that point, Max Homa had birdied the 1st and then hit six consecutive pars. He continued with pars on the back nine and finished the front nine at 3 under.
On the back nine, he parred the 10th, birdied the 11th and bogeyed the 12th, before another birdie on the 16th. His score is 2 under for the round through 16. He is currently tied for 37th place with a score of 2 over par.
In the previous three rounds, Max Homa had scores over par (74, 75, and 73).
Max Homa's chances of playing at the TOUR Championship
Despite playing his best round yet at the 2024 BMW Championship, Max Homa's chances of breaking into the top 30 in the FedEx Cup are slim to none. Homa is set to end his the season at Castle Pines Golf Club.
Homa entered the event ranked 43rd with 1,206 points. To have any chance of cracking the top 30, he needed to win the BMW Championship with at least 119 points, an amount reserved for players who finish in the top 15 of the event.
Homa is far from that position. With his current score (2 over), he is several shots away from that position. So he must already be thinking about next season.
By finishing in the top 50 but not in the top 30, Homa has ensured that he will play in all the Signature Events next season, but not in the major championships. In order to qualify for these, he will have to look for other ways, like maintain his position in the world rankings (he is currently ranked 19th).
Not counting the BMW Championship, Homa's season can be summed up as 19 PGA Tour events played, in which he made 16 cuts. He only finished in the top 10 three times, and his best result of the year was a third-place finish at the Masters Tournament.
His finish at Augusta National Golf Club was also his best career finish in a major championship and only his second top-10 finish in this type of event.
