WATCH: Rory McIlroy throws his club into the water after frustrating shot at BMW Championship

Rory Mcilroy appears to be unhappy with his game so far in the FedEx Cup playoffs. At the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he finished T68 with a score of 9 over, and he has not been at his best in the first two rounds of the BMW Championship either, despite sitting in the top 15 after 36 holes.

The Northern Irishman was even seen throwing a club into the water as a sign of his frustration with a shot that didn't go as he had hoped. The moment was posted on social media, with hundreds of thousands of views in two hours.

The incident occurred on the par-5, 527-yard 17th hole, which features a water hazard in front of the tee. Rory McIlroy hit his tee shot to the right fairway. Unhappy with the result, he threw his club into the water right there.

But Rory McIlroy found the green with his third shot and 2-putted for par. He had previously picked up his club from the water where he had thrown it.

How has Rory McIlroy fared in the 2024 playoffs?

Rory McIlroy had a week to forget at the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. At TPC Southwind, McIlroy shot 9-over and finished tied for 68th (second to last).

McIlroy started with a solid first round of 68, but consecutive rounds of +3, +4 and +4 sent him to the bottom of the leaderboard. His performance included one eagle, eight birdies, 10 bogeys, three double bogeys, and one triple bogey.

In fact, it was his worst finish of the season, excluding the missed cut at The Open Championship.

His run at the BMW Championship started better, with a first round of one eagle, two birdies, and two bogeys (2 under) placing him in the top 10. In the second round, he carded three birdies and two bogeys (1 under) to drop five places on the leaderboard to T15.

His score leaves him 10 shots behind Adam Scott, who leads on 13 under after 36 holes. The Australian set a new course record (63) which was later matched by Ludvig Aberg.

McIlroy came into the FedEx Cup playoffs as the third-highest ranked player, behind Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele. The Northern Irishman held that position thanks to his two victories and four other top-10s during the season.

His victories came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship. Among his top-10s, his second place at the US Open and his 3rd at the Valero Texas Open stand out.

He had another significant result during the season, fishing T5 at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It was the second Olympic top-10 finish of his career.
