WATCH: Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy led TGL reveal unique element of inaugural season
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are heading up TGL, a technology-based golf league. It is primarily going to use the best golf simulators in the business to replicate a tournament and different holes. Ahead of the January 2025 launch, they revealed a special catch that will further set this league apart.
Whenever golfers land in the bunker on a golf course, it's a challenge to get out. They have to stand in a different way, use a different club, and fight with different elements. That can certainly be simulated, but it's not quite the same.
Therefore, TGL is using real sand to replicate it. When players land in the bunker, they will have to step into a real sand pit to virtually hit their ball again. It adds to the difficulty and adds a layer of realism to what is otherwise a virtual reality game.
TGL shared a video of the installation of these sand bunkers a few months before its launch in January. The league is expected to start on January 7. Shortly after, someone's going to take a virtual golf swing in a real sand bunker.
The league is led by Woods and McIlroy but it also features some of the best golfers in the world. Tommy Fleetwood, Hideki Matsuyama, Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and so many others are all going to participate in the inaugural season.
Full TGL schedule revealed
Initially, all that was put on the schedule for TGL's 2024 season was the first three Tuesday matches in January. After that, the others remained unscheduled. They have now been officially put in, so the entire year's worth of events for the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy-led venture is confirmed.
