WATCH: Todd Hamilton delivers The Open Championship’s first shank from the bunkers
Todd Hamilton teed it up at the Open Championship at 1:35 am ET for the first round. On the very first day, Hamilton's golf ball fell in a sand bunker at the Royal Troon, and had to take two shank shots to recover his ball. Hamilton's attempt marked the first shank shot in the 152nd edition of The Open Championship.
At the time of writing, Todd Hamilton has played the first thirteen holes of the opening round. He bogeyed the second hole and double-bogeyed the third hole. Followed by three more bogeys from holes nine, eleven, and twelve. He ended up parring the thirteenth hole.
The video of Hamilton's shank shots was tweeted by X user "Mark Townsend". In the clip, Todd Hamilton is seen taking the first shot which resulted in a failed attempt. This was followed by another shot that landed on the greens.
Previously, he won the Open Championship in 2004. That year, Hamilton knocked out Ernie Els in a playoff. In the opening round, Todd Hamilton dropped three birdies to end at 71, followed by four birdies and one eagle on hole 7 to land at 67 in the next round. In the next two rounds, he scored 67 and 69 with 4 and 5 birdies, respectively.
What prize money is at stake for Todd Hamilton at the Open Championship?
The Open Championship has a purse of $17 million this year, which is a boost with respect to the 2023 purse of $16.5 million. The winner of the 152nd Open Championship will get $3.1 million and the second-place holder will bank $1.759 million. Also, golfers ranking from 4th to 32nd will receive six-digit payouts.
