“We’ll go to the qualifier again” – Sergio Garcia says he’ll compete in 2025 US Open after a solid weekend in Pinehurst
Sergio Garcia is optimistic about playing in the U.S. Open in 2025. The Spanish veteran performed well at the recently concluded major and looks forward to competing in the tournament again next year.
Sergio Garcia received a last-minute invitation from the USGA to play in this year's U.S. Open. He attempted to enter the field by playing in the qualifying round but fell short in a sudden-death playoff. However, the USGA selected him as the first alternate to fill the remaining six spots in the major at the last moment.
Following the conclusion of the 2024 U.S. Open, Sergio Garcia posted a video on his X (formerly Twitter) account, saying:
"Would love to finish up top-10 so that, that would have qualified me for next year's at Oakmont. But you know, we will try to find another way, and if not, we will go to the qualifiers again and try our best. "
Although he failed to finish in the top 10, the former Masters winner performed well at the 2024 US Open. Had he done so, Garcia would have automatically qualified for the 2025 major. Nonetheless, he remains optimistic about his game and is determined to find a way to compete in the tournament next year.
It is important to note that Sergio Garcia tied for 12th place at the 2024 U.S. Open. Despite receiving the exemption to compete in the tournament at the very last minute, he delivered an impressive performance and finished in the top 15.
A look into Sergio Garcia's performance at the US Open over the years
Sergio Garcia made his debut at the US Open in 2000, finishing in a tie for 46th place that year. Over the years, his performance at the Major has improved, but he continues to seek his victory at the event. He has achieved five top-10 finishes at the US Open, with his best coming in 2005 when he tied for third place.
However, in recent years, Garcia has struggled with his game at the Major. He tied for 52nd place in 2019 and missed the cut the following year. In 2021, he finished T19 but again missed the cut in 2022. Last year, he tied for 27th place, and this year he finished T12.
Garcia has participated in all four Majors multiple times in his career and has only won The Masters in 2017. His best finish at the Open Championship was second place in 2007 and 2014. He also finished second at the PGA Championship in 1999 and 2008, which remains his best performance at that Major.
In 2024, Garcia's fellow LIV player Bryson DeChambeau won the US Open with a one-stroke victory over Rory McIlroy.
