“Well-deserved Major champion” – Bryson DeChambeau says he’s ‘proud’ of Xander Schauffele for ‘finally getting the job done’ at PGA Championship
Bryson DeChambeau said he's proud of Xander Schauffele for winning the 2024 PGA Championship. Schauffele won his maiden Major at the recently concluded event, registering a one-stroke victory over DeChambeau to take home the prestigious Wanamaker Trophy.
Following the event, Bryson DeChambeau attended a press conference where he opened up about Schauffele's incredible win, stating that he was proud of the golfer for securing the victory. Speaking of Schauffele, DeChambeau said (via PGA Championship's YouTube Channel):
"First, emotions. I'm proud of Xander for finally getting the job done. I mean he's an amazing golfer and well-deserved Major champion now. He's played well for a long time. I've played against him as a junior, and it's cool to see him not only he's just a great human being but an unbelievable golfer, and it shows this week, and super happy for him. (0:11-0:38)
At the same conference, Bryson DeChambeau also spoke about his own performance. He was impressive with his game and was in contention to win the second Major of his career. He shot a 64 in the final round but fell short by one stroke to win the Major. He added:
"On my side of the coin, it was disappointing, but I played well and didn't strike at my best all week. Felt like I had my b game pretty much. My putting was A+, my wedging was A+, my short game was A+, Driving was like B, and I shot 20 on par in a Major championship. "(0:38-1:04)
DeChambeau was also fabulous with his game at the Masters last month, where he finished in a tie for sixth place. He missed a chance to win that Major and then again narrowly missed winning the PGA Championship. However, the LIV golfer expressed pride in his overall performance.
"Proud of myself for the way I handled adversity. Definitely disappointing, but one that gives me a lot of momentum for the rest of the majors and I said today it was closing time, but it'll be closing time hopefully over the next couple Majors.
"I got to learn from this, and I've learned a lot about myself over the past year and being able to perform at Augusta and be able to perform today shooting seven under. And I know I'm just rambling; it's just that I've got a lot of thoughts in my head right now," he concluded. (1:04: 1:38)
DeChambeau scored under 20 after shooting four rounds of 68, 65, 67 and 64. Viktor Hovland settled in solo third place on the leaderboard, while Thomas Detry tied for fourth place with Collin Morikawa.
