What is the average club head speed on the PGA Tour?

Club head speed is a very important factor in golf and on the PGA Tour. It is the maximum speed right before a club strikes a golf ball, which has a significant effect on the ball's flight and speed. It's most useful off the tee when golfers are taking their first swing, but it's one of the most important metrics in golf.

The average club head speed on tour is currently 115.87 miles per hour. This metric was updated following the conclusion of the Memorial Tournament on Sunday, June 9. On average, PGA Tour players are swinging their clubs almost 116 miles per hour.

It is a very important stat for determining distance. For example, on a 500-yard hole, it's very helpful to be able to hit the ball with tremendous speed. This may add a few yards to the drive and potentially allow for a birdie or at least prevent a bogey from simply starting too far away from the hole.

PGA Tour golfers average club head speed

Certain golfers are much faster than the average speed on the PGA Tour, though. Presently, Cameron Champ leads golfers in his own average club head speed: 126.90. He has 108 total attempts factoring in.

This is not the determining factor for success. It helps, but it's far from the only aspect of golf. For example, Scottie Scheffler's average club head speed is 118.84. That's above average, but it only ranks 47th. Yet, he's the world number one in OWGR by a wide margin.

Other successful golfers have lower club head speeds. Brian Harman, the 2023 Open Championship winner, is sitting at 109.93. Lucas Glover, last year's FedEx St. Jude Championship winner, is at 111.24.

World number seven golfer Collin Morikawa is also below average at 114.12. Shane Lowry (114.93), Tommy Fleetwood (114.93), 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama (115.50), and Keegan Bradley (115.61) are all below the tour average as well.

This list does not include LIV Golf members. Bryson DeChambeau is one of the world's best ball-strikers known for his swing speed, but he's not on the PGA Tour to be counted.
