What does getting ‘sawgrassed’ mean? Did Jordan Spieth just add a new word to golf glossary?
Jordan Spieth does not have a great relationship with TPC Sawgrass. The golfer’s 2014 debut, which saw him finish in a tie for fourth, remains his best performance at the venue. This week, the golfer once again fell short and finished T19 on the Stadium Course.
Following yet another disappointing outing at the TPC Sawgrass, Spieth came out calling it a "tough track." Opening up about his relatively poor record here, the three-time major winner said that a top-25 finish at Sawgrass "felt like a win anywhere else."
He went on to coin a term—"sawgrassed"—to explain his situation. The 29-year-old said that "everyone gets sawgrassed sometimes."
Jordan Spieth says he got ‘sawgrassed’
When asked about his bad performances at TPC Sawgrass, Jordan Spieth said that he fails to play with discipline on the course. The 13-time PGA Tour winner reflected on the mistakes he made and said that he gets "sawgrassed sometimes."
Speaking about his week at The Players Championship, Spieth said:
“It's a tough track; a top-25 for me out here feels like a win anywhere else. It’s just my history. I was kind of half-kidding, but my history here isn't great.”
He added:
“I just don't play with a lot of discipline, and I didn't today. I thought I should have birdied 10 and 11, and so I get on 12, and instead of just bailing out right in the collection area and making birdie, I'm trying to hit a driver on the green and make the birdie easier, have a chance at eagle, and I hit one in the water. I just do that every single year here. [On] 11, I did everything right; there happened to not be any sand in the bunker, so it bounced, and I end up making par."
He continued:
"You get Sawgrassed sometimes. Actually, every round everyone gets Sawgrassed to an extent … something quirky happens. But my aggressive nature and inability to accept sometimes not making birdie when I thought I was going to, makes me make too many mistakes on a course that you can't get away with it.”

Jordan finished the 2023 Players with an even-par 72 to finish tied for 19th at six under. He fell 11 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler. The 29-year-old made the cut and seemed happy about it on Saturday.
It is pertinent to note that the golfer has missed the cut five times in his seven Players outings since his impressive debut.
After a forgettable finish this week, Spieth is now eyeing a strong comeback at Augusta National next month. The golfer will be looking for a strong outing at the Masters, where he holds a glittering record.
Having won the green jacket in 2015, Spieth will be planning to make it double this time out. He has managed two second-place and two third-place finishes in the event in the past seven years.
