What happened to Scottie Scheffler? Police detention reports at PGA Championship 2024 explored

Scottie Scheffler was detained by the police on Friday (May 17). The World No. 1 golfer was detained outside the entrance at Valhalla Golf Club. According to reports, the cops cited 'a misunderstanding with traffic flow' as the reason for the detainment.

According to ESPN, Scheffler was stopped at the Valhalla entrance and was handcuffed. The ace golfer, who posted a four-under-par at the Major on Thursday, drove past a police officer during the early hours of Friday morning.


Scottie Scheffler was on his way to the course ahead of Round 2 when the incident occurred. The police officer, who arrested the golfer, attempted to stop him ahead of the venue. The cop car followed him to the entrance of Valhalla, where the golfer stopped.

Scheffler was positioned around 10 to 20 yards from the police officer when he was first asked to step out of the car. The officer was spotted screaming at Scheffler, demanding him to get out of his car. He was reportedly seated in the car for 20 to 30 seconds, before coming out.

The player has since been taken into custody.


Why was Scottie Scheffler arrested?

According to reports, a deadly pedestrian crash occurred in the area near Valhalla Golf Course on Friday morning. Scottie Scheffler was trying to cross the area of the crash scene when he had an alleged ‘misunderstanding with traffic flow'.

According to WAVE News, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) placed the following charges on Scheffler:

  • Second-degree assault of a police officer
  • Third-degree criminal mischief
  • Reckless driving
  • Disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic

According to a PGA announcement, the PGA Championship Round 2 start was delayed by one hour and 20 minutes due to the traffic situation caused by the accident in the area.
